Peter Yates (1920-1982), artist and architect was one of the founders of the innovative partnership Ryder and Yates, which brought modern architecture to the North East of England in the post-war period. The practice was directly influenced by Le Corbusier and Berthold Lubetkin.
Peter worked as a commercial artist in Fleet Street and served as a fireman on St Paul's Watch in 1940. Whilst in Paris with the Supreme HQ Allied Expeditionary Forces, he met Gertrude Stein, Georges Braque and Le Corbusier.
Peter Yates Veduta Di Una Cita Painting
'He can see, this boy' Le Corbusier proclaimed.
Bethold Lubetkin said of the paintings 'How can one exercise a value judgement when one is confronted with magic? Yet it is here for us to see.' 'Magic' also came to the artist Kenneth Rowntree's mind when he wrote of Yates' paintings, drawing attention to 'the economy, the paring away of inessentials, with poetry never very far away, and on occasions a whiff of magic.'  After the war, Peter worked in the office of pioneering engineer Ove Arup, and on the Masterplan for the New Town of Peterlee with Lubetkin, before returning to Paris to run a commercial art firm in 1950. In 1953 he moved to Newcastle to work as an architect with Gordon Ryder where he lived and raised his family until his death in 1982.
