Restored Peter Yates Mural Unveiled at the Tyneside Cinema

Also on the night of April the 23rd, Peter Yates’ freshly renovated 1976 mural entitled “Shadows and Light” was unveiled at the newly reopened Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle. “It portrays a potted history of moving pictures, starting with a Victorian zoetrope machine and ending with an Andy Warhol-inspired portrait of Marilyn Monroe”.
Mural Restored to Glory
One of the features of
the restored Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle is the wall
mural painted by Peter Yates in the 1970s.
It portrays a potted history of moving pictures,
starting with a Victorian Zoetrope machine and ending
with an Andy Warhol-inspired portrait of Marilyn
Monroe.
The mural was discovered at the start of an 18 months
redevelopment project at the cinema.
The cinema paid for the mural to be removed and
protected in storage until it could be moved back
into the revamped building.
Peter Yates was a committed member of the Tyneside
Cinema Club in the 1960’s and he later became
involved in the redecoration of the original Club
Cinema, which later became the Electra”.
